Young Lords Document Drop

In honor of this weekend’s “Young Lords Way” Street naming in East Harlem, NYC, a friend and supporter Tamara K. Nopper has linked us to a treasure trove of Young Lords bilingual newspapers from the 1970’s. While we don’t agree with everything said in the pages, the Young Lords clearly fought many of the same injustices we see today.

While Eric Garner’s death on 7/17/14 by an NYPD officer’s chokehold is disturbing, that high level of police brutality is all too common in communities like ours. Eric Garner was not the 1st innocent person of color to be killed at the hands of the police. If we don’t remember our history, and take action, he will certainly not be the last.

The street naming will take place this saturday
July 26th @ 1pm
111th st & Lexington Avenue

How to Be a Chingona in 10 Easy Steps
1. Live for your own approval. Center yourself. Be alone. Create your own space.
2. Discover your own powers. What floods you with joy?
3. Find true humility and practice it.
4. Keep your palabra, your word.
5. What are you using to cover or mask your pain? Address it.
6. Your only true possessions are your actions.

8. Live in the present moment.
9. Depression has a purpose if you use it before it uses you. Transform it to light. Compost it through art. If you can’t do it by yourself, see a professional curandera (healer, therapist).

If I had a pinche peso for every time my politeness was taken for weakness my mom would be driving around in a new car and my dad wouldn’t have to worry about retirement cuz that’s how much it happens and that’s the first thing I’d do w those pesos. #bitter
